Basement Remodeling Trends: Home Gyms

If getting up and driving yourself to the gym is a drag, why not bring the gym to your home? You can avoid waiting for equipment, unsanitary practices, and crowded gyms by staying home. You can also save valuable time and money by building a basement home gym.

With a home gym in your basement, you are free to workout whenever you want for as long as you want. If going to a gym is a barrier for you, building a home gym in your basement is an ideal way to get your exercise in. At Roofers of Minnesota, we specialize in basement remodels, and building home gyms is one of our favorite ways to convert a basement into usable space. Let’s take a look at some considerations for building a basement home gym.

Planning and Design

The nice thing about home gyms in your basement is that most gyms are fairly utilitarian, so converting a basic basement to a gym is not too difficult. You will need to measure your usable space to determine how much room you have for equipment and exercise.

Ceiling Height

You will need to consider the ceiling height as well, particularly if you are jumping, lifting overhead weights, or performing box jumps. In addition, some equipment like elliptical machines and treadmills require additional vertical clearance.

Flooring

One important aspect of your home gym is the flooring. You will need durable flooring that is easy to replace when needed and can withstand dropped weights safely. Ensure your flooring choice is thick and comfortable to avoid putting extra pressure on your joints while working out. Some types of flooring you can choose from include:

  • Rubber flooring

  • Foam mats

  • Carpet tiles

  • Vinyl flooring

Lighting

You don’t want to work out in the dark, so ensure you choose enough bright lighting options for your basement home gym. Recessed lighting, wall lights, or low-profile fixtures can brighten up a dark basement and give you plenty of light to exercise safely. LED fixtures provide ample light and are energy efficient.

Ventilation and Climate Control

If your basement was not originally designed as a usable living space, you will need to consider ventilation and climate control. You will need adequate ventilation to ensure your home gym has fresh air and will not allow moisture to build up, causing mold. You can use fans, air purifiers, and dehumidifiers to keep your gym dry and fresh.

Basements are usually cooler than other parts of your home, so you may not need to add additional climate control. However, if you need to, add a safe heating or air conditioner to your basement for better control.

Equipment and Accessories

The fun part of building a home gym is deciding which equipment you want to include. Whether you want cardio, strength training, or a combination of both, you can choose your favorite machines and install them in your basement home gym. You can also consider mirrors on the walls to ensure your form is perfect to avoid injury.

Some examples of home gym equipment include:

  • Treadmills, bikes, or ellipticals

  • Dumbbells, kettlebells, resistance bands

  • Power rack or squat rack

  • Cable machine or multi-gym

  • Yoga or stretching area

Storage Solutions

Your gym needs adequate equipment storage capabilities. Installing shelves, racks, cabinets, or lockers can provide storage for equipment, gym clothes, and other accessories. Pegboards are also good for hanging things like resistance bands or smaller items.

Entertainment

Every good gym needs music and entertainment. If you prefer music, consider a speaker system built into the basement for seamless audio. If you like watching TV while you work out, a wall-mounted television and streaming options can be installed. Ensure your Wi-Fi will reach your basement as well. If not, you can add a mesh system to expand your coverage.
